Roswell, New Mexico Polyam Fic Rec List

Roswell, New Mexico has a ridiculously good cast with an enormous amount of onscreen chemistry. This has resulted a huge number of viable ships. This list recs some of my favourite polyam fics.

Kaliz = Kyle Valenti/Max Evans/Liz Ortecho

  • Grounded - xForEverythingElse (PrimaryScavQueen) - Liz wants Kyle in the bed she shares with Max. Max will do anything for Liz. PWP.
  • All I know is that I'll meet you there by @larenoz - (1,505 words) - Shameless self-promotion!! Some days, Kyle can't believe he got this lucky. Liz, Max and Kyle take a well deserved vacation on the coast once their lives settle down, and enjoy an evening together in the pool. Porn, that's it.

Malexa/Milexa = Michael Guerin/Alex Manes/Maria DeLuca

Mylex = Michael Guerin/Kyle Valenti/Alex Manes

  • open up my eager eyes by @haloud (series total - 44,525 words). It is impossible for me to overstate how much I love this fic series. It is so, so, so good. This is my detailed rec post for this series. It's a series of interconnected fics which have a variety of vibes that all still work together. It's about how Alex and Michael and Kyle comes together and then how their relationships grow and develop over time.
  • Conversations in the Crashdown - darkangel86 (6,491 words) - a bit of a talk fest but one where some very necessary things get said by all involved. No porn.

Formilex = Michael Guerin/Alex Manes/Forrest Long

  • The Mystery and the Muscle of Love - DaughterofElros - Alex and Michael are together, but Alex and Forrest hook up when Forrest is in town. Sometimes Michael joins them. But what happens when Michael and Forrest start to develop feelings for each other?

Delvecho = Maria DeLuca/Max Evans/Liz Ortecho

DeGuerenti = Maria DeLuca/Michael Guerin/Kyle Valenti There are plenty of other polyam ships that I haven't listed, mainly because I haven't read them, so can't rec. But I'd love if people added their recs for the missing ships:
  • Kylubel = Kyle Valenti/Maria DeLuca/Isobel Evans
  • Marosabel = Maria DeLuca/Rosa Ortecho/Isobel Evans
  • Any others you want to rec

Fic Rec - We Were Bound To Get Together by @myrmidryad

We Were Bound To Get Together by @myrmidryad

Writing a detailed fic rec without spoiling is hard! So there may be some vague-blogging to follow.

Upfront, I love a good slow burn fic. I love a long fic. And this one has both these elements. I love these types of fics because so often, the characters we love are flawed, with history and love and trauma and pain in their lives. And it can be hard to work through all that in a shorter fic. Longer format fics give characters more complexity and depth, and this is what we get with this fic.

This fic is a story about how three people, who have all loved and hurt each other in different ways, work through that history to find themselves in a new, better, loving place.

I love that this fic gives its characters time. Time to be angry, to be hurt, to feel betrayed, to hurt, to forgive, to apologize. This fic is very much about the journey.  Everyone gets the chance to have their say, to be angry, to be hateful, to be self-ish but they are able to get past that with communication and honesty. They act like the adults they are (and in many ways how we’d love them to be in canon - just talk to each other people!!)

It’s a process, sometimes painful. It’s not instant forgiveness after an apology. They all have different relationships they need to repair and that takes time. They aren’t the same people they were before, because of time that has passed, because of decisions they have all made, because of the things they have experienced. It’s about how they build new relationships with each other. Different from what they had before, but better, stronger.

This is a fic about Maria, Alex and Michael’s journey.

Why did I leave it so long to mention who it was about? Because I think it’s very easy to get stuck in ship ruts in fandom. I think there are people who have very rigid ideas about what ships are acceptable. I think there are people who always need someone to be the bad guy. This story doesn’t work on that premise, and I love that. Making mistakes makes you human, not evil. How you deal with those mistakes is the important part.

And in this fic they do that as adults who realise the world isn’t black or white, especially when none of the people involved fit neatly into any sort of binary.

What I love about Maria in this fic is that she finds that almost impossible balance between doing what is right for her and what is right for the people she loves, without compromising herself or them. That is such an important thing to see in fic. She drives the story but is never portrayed as just a tool for the men in the narrative. She is integral. It is all their story.

She really listens to people. She doesn’t just hear the words, she listens to what the words really mean, about the life experiences that led to those words. A simple “I….don’t know” from Michael speaks of a history of satisfying other people’s needs without really ever thinking about their own, and what that says about the people around them that let that happen.

Michael is a person who will flay himself open for those he loves and trusts. Often in a way that on the surface seems positive but really isn’t. It is action rooted in pain and trauma and survival. But when given the opportunity, and support blossoms.

Alex is the opposite, a study in control - mainly of himself. Again, a product of doing what he needs to survive, both physically and mentally. But who when he allows himself the opportunity, can find all sorts of love from people who truly want him to be happy.

If I was to pick one word to describe this fic, it would be tenderness.

Really good writing gets you out of your comfort zone. It creates characters and stories that you might normally pass by. It creates believable characters whose actions in the story make sense. You believe them. You want them to succeed. You come to love them. This is that fic. Go read it, you won’t be sorry.

Fic Rec - Reflections on the “open up my eager eyes” series by @haloud

This is going to be a mix between fic review but mainly personal reflections on the stories. I promise no coherence or consistency whatsoever. Think incoherent ravings of a mad woman. It’s basically going to be raving about how much I love this series of stories. There will be sort-of spoilers. As always, read the tags and notes on the fics people.

Part 1 - tuck my hair behind my ears and touch my soul - Alex/Kyle, Michael - Kyle POV

This story kicks off my favourite Roswell, New Mexico fic series. It hooked me from the opening line, which is one of the best ever in the fandom, setting the scene perfectly - "It starts at the Wild Pony, that breeding ground for bad ideas."

This story is told from Kyle's POV and introduces us to an Alex and Michael who have found their balance, with themselves and with each other in a relationship with some dom/sub dynamics. It's a relationship that they invite Kyle into, initially for the night. While there's play with power dynamics and some angsty bits, the overall feel of this fic is intense but light?

It's about everyone getting what they need, and in Kyle's case finding out what that need actually is. The characters are so spot on, an easy to believe extension of the characters we've seen on screen and come to love.

Even when things get sexy and filthy and intense, there is still an underlying tenderness between the three of them that I just love. It's the combination of filthy hotness, believable characters and emotional connection that is complete catnip to me in a fic.

There is a wealth of little details that give so much depth (story, character, emotions) to what is essentially an extended sex scene. In fact, they barely touch, the intensity generated by the emotional and mental connections that all three characters make.

Part 2 - what yields the need for those who lead us - Alex, Kyle/Michael - Kyle POV

Kyle is back for another night with Alex and Michael, but with the D/s and physical aspects of the relationship turned up to 11. This one sees all three of them getting into the sexy action.

But while the fic is smutty, Kyle never treats the underlying relationship that he is invited into as anything other than significant, and about so much more than sex - "I can do casual, but nothing about this feels casual to me."

Both of these stories give us a slightly different take on the characters we already know. Alex’s iron control is re-purposed to give chaotic, adrift Michael freedom - by giving him boundaries, and to give Kyle freedom - by letting him give up some of the responsibility he carries everyday. Everyone gets something they need.

Part 3 - i just ask you to be patient - Michael/Kyle/Alex - Kyle POV

This story is about what comes after the amazing, kinky, hot sex. What happens when sex is off the table and they need to rely on their words? What happens when you put three people who’ve had their worlds shattered in different but inter-connected ways - together, trying to build something new? What we get is two steps forward and one step back. But that makes sense with these characters. Mis-steps through self-sacrifice and doubt. Not feeling worthy of love. The fear that comes with opening up your heart to other people.

“I didn’t want to....take up too much space.” I mean, jesus. These boys.

Part 4 - a bookend to the weirdest of weeks - Michael/Kyle, Alex - Kyle POV

This one is all about Kyle. Not many fics have explored the impact of the revelations about Jim and Rosa on Kyle. What we’ve seen in the show hints that he has a really good relationship with his parents, probably the best out of all of the humans and so he had the most to lose when he found out the truth about Jim and what he did at Caulfield. This fic looks at how he deals with that and its specific impact on his relationship with Michael.

Basically Kyle is a big ball of inherited guilt in this one.

How do you build a relationship on the ashes of your fathers’ actions? How does Kyle deal with having “...two Jim Valenti’s living side by side in his mind to grieve…” In some ways it’s the perennial story of the parent we knew as a child versus the parent we see when we are adults. But it’s also about how do you reconcile your love for a parent when they have done something that has destroyed another person you love?

“Caulfield shattered Michael.”

How do you grieve and think about forgiveness in those circumstances? How do you build on the ashes?

Part 5 - it’s a postcard, i’m settled - Kyle/Alex/Michael

Domestic bliss, Michael loves a challenge and filthy, filthy smut. I love it.

Part 6 - the stumbling phase of the midnight waltz - Michael/Alex, Kyle - Michael POV

Not gonna lie, this one sort of hurts. This one is Michael slowly falling apart when Alex and Kyle aren’t there to help hold him together. Where Michael’s fear of abandonment led to some poor decision making, “...he left his phone under the bed, so the weight of silence didn’t hit so heavy.” He can pretend that he’s missing the calls because his phone isn’t there, not because no one is calling (even when they are).

Michael in this fic is just so fragile. It’s not an uncharacteristic version of Michael, but rather a version that we only ever see in flashes, easy to miss or ignore. But here, with nowhere to run and no one to hide behind, we see that fragility in its many forms. We know from previous fics that this Michael has been shattered by the events of his life and in this story we see those fractures grow and become more obvious.

But of course Alex, he sees and asks so gently “May I touch you?”, followed by “Are you ready for me to tell you what you need?”. Ahh, I love these boys.

Part 7 - blink back to let me know - Alex/Kyle - Alex POV

This one takes place immediately after the stumbling phase of the midnight waltz (previous fic). Alex is reaching out to Kyle for support, feeling raw after taking care of Michael. And Kyle uses his superpowers - communication, calm and support - to help Alex get back where he needs to be. This is an exploration of some of Alex and Kyle’s insecurities of brokenness, weakness and not belonging. But also of pieces fitting together.

Part 8 - i’ll be your key - Alex/Michael/Kyle - Michael POV

This is a story of spikiness and sharp edges. Of the fear and anger and frustration that comes with physical danger and not being able to protect the people we love. I love Michael’s concern for Kyle, his need to touch him, to make sure he’s alright but also his uncertainty that he is allowed to. Of Alex’s fear and anger at Kyle getting hurt, that it is his fault, a failure to protect him. Of Kyle’s frustration at tough guy bullshit and professional compromise. They are in a place where they are still finding their way, but are certain enough to tell each other the truth, but still living with the weight of legacy, guilt and insecurity.

But also where once they are sure Kyle is safe, Michael can be his dickish but likable self.

Part 9 - tender, frantic, life-affirming - Kyle/Alex/Michael

This is all about the “tender, frantic, life-affirming sex” that Michael was angling for in the previous fic, but with a slightly lighter tone than the description would indicate.

Like so many of the stories in this series, even when we’re getting top shelf smut (which this is), we also get these small glimpses of the characters that gives them another texture, more depth - be it Alex’s sweet-shark smile, Michael being completely out of it or Kyle’s being overwhelmed.

And I’m not gonna lie, I’m totally here for the dynamics in this one, which are masterful. Alex at his bossy, dommy best, Michael melting at being able to let go and just be, and Kyle giving and taking as needed.

Part 10 - say what’s on your mind - Kyle/Michael - Kyle POV

Names can be weapons, names can be shields, names have power - names are important.

This story always hits me hard because name fics involving these characters are my kryptonite. I love them. This one is about Kyle and Michael calling him Doc. Because Kyle knows how much Michael fears hospitals, he questions why Michael calls him Doc. Kyle feels guilty, Michael thinks he’s fucked up, Alex drops everything to help. They are back to sharp edges, guilt and fear. I want to give them all hugs and a good talking to.

Kyle runs, and Michael, god, Michael, he needs another fucking hug.

But then, such heartbreaking tenderness and care.

Part 11 - give me all you’e got - Alex/Michael/Kyle

Michael is getting better at asking for what he needs, and what he needs is Alex calling the shots for him and Kyle. Alex is happy to oblige. Porny, porn with feels.

Conclusion

While the series is definitely about the three of them, it’s one of the few that explores in depth what a relationship between Michael and Kyle could look like. What the dynamics and emotions of that would look like, how they would both deal with not only their personal histories, but with the weight of family legacy.

I love this series because we get angst and pain and hurt but we also get love and tenderness and protectiveness. We get harsh words but also soft touches. In a story about how three people find their balance with each other, the writing is perfectly balanced.

I love everything about this series. It’s hot, it’s complicated, the characters read true and have depth and flaws and tenderness. It’s believable. It has everything I want in a fic. It really is word perfect. Go read them!!

Canonical Polyamory in “Black Sails”

Some thoughts on the depiction of polyamory in Black Sails (up to end of Season 2).

This was written very quickly for posting on a discussion site, so it isn't particularly in depth. As such when I have time I may return to it to make some additions. It only covers until the end of Season 2.

------

The first season is pretty much focused on setting up characters and lots of pirate stuff, with the three main sets of romantic relationships being introduced. However, Season 2 sees those relationships being explored in more depth and in the case of two of them, expanding. So that at the half way point of Season 2, two of the three romantic story lines in the show are about poly triads.

The first is between Rackham, Anne and Max (female). Rackham and Ann are a long established pirate couple. At the beginning of Season 2, Anne acts on her attraction to prostitute Max. Initially, Rackham isn’t involved but this changes and eventually the three are together sexually. We see this relationship develop in real time and things aren’t all smooth sailing. Rackham is worried that he is loosing Anne, someone who he has been with for the majority of their lives. But he offers her the freedom to explore the new relationship with Max. Eventually, Anne invites both Max and Rackham to her bed. While they both accept, initially they aren’t involved with each other, only with Anne but when they do start to develop their relationship physically, Anne then feels threatened. This is further exacerbated when pirate politics forces Rackham to choose Max over Anne.

The second triad is between main characters Captain Flint, Miranda Barlow and the previously unseen Thomas Hamilton. This relationship is revealed via flashbacks. From the beginning of the show, we are aware of the deep relationship between Flint and Miranda. We are also aware that the two share a strong connection forged in the past, the details of which we don’t know. Season 2 starts to fill in the blanks about both Flints past (about how/why he became a pirate) and the truth of his relationship with Miranda. We find out that Miranda Barlow is in fact the wife of Thomas Hamilton, son of Lord Hamilton, all of whom move in the top most circles of political and social power in England.

Thomas and Miranda are involved in the salon movement of the Enlightenment, drawing the socially inferior Flint into their inner circle. And eventually into their beds. Flint is involved sexually and romantically with both Thomas and Miranda, but with hints that Miranda and Thomas’ relationship isn’t sexual or not as sexually focused as that between Flint and Thomas, but that’s just a guess at this stage. The nature of the relationship between Miranda and Flint during their time in England is not detailed but they do appear to have a sexual relationship later while on Nassau.

The third relationship depicted is between pirate Charles Vane and Eleanor Guthrie, who acts as middleman between the Pirates and legitimate merchants on the island of Nassau. This is the most volatile relationship in the show, being on-again, off-again. This is the second relationship that Eleanor is depicted as having on the show. The first one is with Max, and therefore established Eleanor canonically bisexual.

So, why do I call this a poly-positive show? It doesn’t play any of these relationships for cheap laughs or titillation. All the people and relationships are shown as complicated, evolving and meaningful to those involved. They are explored by showing how each of the characters struggles with their feelings and how their decisions on how to pursue these feelings impact on their lives - sometimes with dramatic and tragic results.

Another interesting thing is that it shows these poly relationships developing at completely opposite ends of the social, political, and economic spectrum - the top and bottom (or even outside) of English society. The relationships are undertaken by those with everything to loose (Flint and the Hamiltons') and those with nothing to loose (socially - Rackham and Anne). They portray the characters as flawed, insecure, selfish, loving and many other things, in other words, real people, not stereotypes.

Another positive, the poly relationships are central to the story line but they aren’t exploitative. They are key to what happens to the characters but aren’t highlighted in a finger pointing way or negative way. Bad things happen to the characters, and sometimes their relationships are part of the cause for their misfortune, but never the only cause and often only an excuse to further the political or financial gains of their enemies.

So, I’m really hoping the show continues in its current vain because while it won’t win any Oscars, it’s a good bit of fun (mostly, it does take the odd dark turn now and then) and it’s one of the few shows with any sort of poly relationship depicted and part of the even smaller group that shows them in a positive way.

Carina Can't Win

Epiphany time.

I just worked out why a lot of the Carina hate annoys me so much.

A lot of the criticism of Carina focuses on her not addressing various issues raised in the show in enough depth. On the surface this is a valid concern. But, and it’s a big but, Carina is being punished for doing a really important thing that we complain is so often lacking in film and television - diversity.

She has given us a very diverse cast of characters in terms of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, education, ability.

She has given us a diverse cast of actors in terms of race, ethnicity, sexuality (and possibly other things).

She has given us a diverse story line addressing some serious social and political issues that are impacting people right now - racism, homophobia, bisexual visibility, immigration, health and education inequality, inter-racial relationships, scientific independence, women’s rights, redemption as an achievable goal etc

Roswell, New Mexico is the intersectional show we’ve all been demanding and now that we’ve got it people seem to spend all their time complaining how it’s not perfect or intersectional enough or something.

There is never going to be enough time for the show to deal with all the issues it raises in the detail/depth they deserve. That’s just a matter of practicalities. The only way for that to happen would be for each character to get their own show, each with a 3 season run.

But sometimes it’s enough for a show to just give an issue a positive representation, even at a superficial level (DM me if you want me to rant at you about why I will forever love Shemar Moore and SWAT).

Imperfect representation is better than none - as long as it doesn’t turn into stereotypical or damaging representation (and yes, perfect would be better but sometimes it’s dolly steps). That naming of something can be the all important foundation that others can build something better, something deeper on.

I’m not saying that Carina or the show is above criticism. There is always room improvement. And there have been some issues or representation that she admits wasn’t done well and that will need to be corrected.

And when there is criticism of it’s often vague and not specific. They generally boil down to different versions of “she’s not writing the character how i want them to be.” And it’s fine to feel that way but let’s not act like it’s anything more than an opinion.

Yes, Carina can be frustrating but she’s given me what I know is going to be one of my favourite shows ever, so I don’t really care.

Why Michael Doesn't Chase

 Shortest meta ever.

One observation about Michael and Alex’s dance that I interpret differently to a lot of people in fandom is why it is that Michael never chases after Alex or rarely initiates things between them.

It’s consent.

Nearly every interaction between them in S1 ends with some form of Alex telling them they aren’t together and that he doesn’t want them to be together. This isn’t an anti-Alex comment, it’s just how their interaction play out.

Michael not chasing after Alex or not initiating contact is then interpreted as him not caring as much. But I think it’s the very opposite. Michael is someone who has had his agency and consent denied for a lot of his life. And he’s seen the same thing happen to Alex.

So when Alex says they’re over, or that he doesn’t want Michael around, Michael respects that. He takes Alex at his word. He respects Alex’s wishes. Because explicit consent is important to both of them.

Pursuing someone who has said they don’t want you to isn’t romantic, it’s dis-empowering and disrespectful.

So I see Michael listening to what Alex wants and respecting that as a sign of strength, because we know how much he wants to be with Alex. But he respects what Alex wants, even when it hurts. And that is strength, not weakness.

OK, not such a short meta after all.

Similar But Not So Easy - Michael and Maria

One of the things that I think draws Michael and Maria to each other is that they both identify as outsiders, and they are both looking for something “easy”.

When Maria is talking to Liz (after Alex has called Liz out for being a bad friend for not knowing what was going on in Maria’s life), she talks about how she wanted to be the fun friend. She doesn’t want to put her problems on other people. She’s been brought up as a self-reliant, independent woman, raised by a single mother who was also self-reliant and independent (which we learn is a family trait).

While she had a loving and happy home life, she still had a sense of not belonging. She grew up feeling like her and her mum were the only black people in the world. Which probably reinforced her sense of both independence and isolation. While Maria is more integrated into the community as the owner of the locals bar, you get the feeling that she still feels somewhat isolated from the rest of the community, apart in some way. Which is why she’s so happy when her people - Liz and Alex - return to Roswell.

Michael is also very reluctant to let others know he is struggling or needs help (understatement of the YEAR). Michael has had to become self-reliant in order to survive. He puts up a front of self-reliance and toughness, that he uses to protect himself both physically and emotionally. If he doesn’t let anyone in, they can’t hurt him.

But also for Michael, his self-reliance and independence is framed in terms of an overwhelming need to not be a burden to those around him. I can hear more than one of his foster parents calling him a burden, not worth the money that looking after him brings in. And this has carried over into his adult life. He parses all his relationships by what he can bring to them in terms of usefulness. Because that’s the only experience he has - that people only want him around for what he can do for them. His experience of love and affection has always been conditional. This sort of plays into what I think is Michael natural helping/service orientation. And it just doesn’t occur to him (and why should it, given the majority of his experiences?) that people might want him around because they like him.

So Michael makes decisions based on not being a burden to people, afraid that if he becomes too much trouble, they will cut him out of their lives - often by leaving him - either physically or emotionally.

And this whole mind-set is then reinforced by the need to keep a low profile, to not stand out, to be as ordinary as possible. All of which means not asking for help, dealing with things by himself.

So for both of them, the other person is someone uninvolved in their issues. Michael really doesn’t know much about what is going on with Maria (apart from knowing that Mimi “wanders”) and Maria obviously has no idea about the alien thing (and is only now just beginning to get an idea of where Alex fits in Michael’s life). So compared to everyone else, to each other they are basically baggage/burden free. Michael can be just the rough and tumble local mechanic who drinks a little bit too much and Maria can be the fun and sexy local bar owner. They know each other enough to be interested but not enough to bogged down by the past.

But it is a relationship essentially built on lies of omission. And when those unvoiced truths become known, then the easiness of their relationship will become just another complication.

For Alex - The Battle Continues - S1 Ep 3

First off, this isn’t a post about having a go at Alex but he is the focus of the post so other characters actions aren’t addressed. The comments on this post are specifically about Alex’s actions in this ep only. Holding Alex to account for his actions is not blaming him for his actions. I love Alex Manes. He is a great character whose been through a lot. But you can be a great character while still having flaws (all the great characters do, it’s usually an integral part of what makes them great). So this looks at one sequence in the show where Alex unintentionally hurts someone else. It doesn’t make him a bad person, but it is unrealistic and does a disservice to his character to ignore those flaws and the consequences they bring. Because it is working on, and overcoming our flaws that let’s us be better people.

Some thoughts on Ep 3. The thing that makes the drive-in scene so painful is that it starts off so hopeful. Alex knows he hurt Michael earlier at the Airstream when Isobel turned up. He didn’t mean to, but when he so emphatically shut down the idea of Michael telling Isobel about them, he just added weight (unintentionally) to Michael’s sense of not being good enough, of not being public worthy, of being good enough to fuck, but not good enough to be seen in  with.

So when Alex comes up to Michael at the drive-in, making the first move, I think he does so with the best of intentions. He knows he hurt Michael and this is him attempting to make it up to him. To show him he’s not afraid to be seen with him in a very public setting - one tied very closely to both of them - Isobel for Michael and the military for Alex.

The framing of the whole drive-in sequence is interesting. Unlike so many of their interactions, this one takes place in outside in daylight. Alex is wearing light cloths (white patterned shirt, light denim jacket - so different to the dark, blend in colours he usually wears), it’s a fun family event. Everything says lightness, happiness, fun. It’s as positive environment as they have ever been in together.

Yet, as the sun sets and the light darkens, so does the mood. We know what’s coming as soon as we see Alex and his father interact. The bile that Jesse spouts has just enough truth in it to get its hooks into Alex. He knows what his father is, he knows what he’s capable of, yet even knowing all this, Alex succumbs to it. Because despite everything that has happened, Alex still isn’t ready, he still isn’t able to break away from his father. He is a work in progress. He’s still fighting that battle, he is yet to win it.

And this is what makes the whole sequence so heartbreaking. Alex has gone in with the best of intentions to do right by Michael, but all he succeeds in doing is wrecking him further. Raise his hopes, then dash them. And the absolute worst part is that Michael isn’t surprised - he’s resigned. He hoped for a different outcome but he didn’t really expect it. But even knowing all this, he still let Alex in, he still gave him another chance. And he always probably will, because for Michael, Alex is that person, the one person he will never be able to deny, because as he so simply states, they’re cosmic.

Kyle Valenti Is Pivotal

Within the Roswell New Mexico fandom, Kyle Valenti has been has been shipped with a number of other characters on the show. He has also been shipped in two very different triads. Triads in fandom tend to be fairly obvious groupings, it’s unusual that a character naturally fits into more than one.

Kyle Valenti has had a fascinating character arc on Roswell New Mexico. We know he started off as a stereotypical teenage homophobic alpha jock who transformed himself into a compassionate caregiver as an adult. His more stable home life growing up, his life experiences outside of Roswell and the confidence that these experiences have given him allow him to be comfortable with who he is as a person.

Throughout the show, present day Kyle is shown as a caring, compassionate, principled man who is well aware of the shortcomings of his teenage years who actively works as being a good person. He is a doctor, a surgeon who daily holds the lives of people in his hands, making life and death decisions - being in control. But this is balanced by also being a caregiver - someone who puts the needs of others first, without judgement - where he has no control.

This dichotomous reality gives us the possibility of two very different emotional needs from Kyle. One where he needs to give up being the responsible one, the decision maker, and one where he gets to be in control, putting his needs and wants (within acceptable limitations) first.

Michael, Kyle and Alex (Mylex)

This is perhaps the more unexpected triad of the two under discussion as this is the grouping with the most baggage. Kyle and Alex (and to a lesser extent Kyle and Michael) have a long and turbulent history. Kyle and Alex were childhood friends, whose relationship soured when Alex’s sexuality became an issue in their teenage years. Kyle actively bullied Alex for his sexuality - something that Michael resents Kyle for both due to its impact on Alex but also to a lesser extent, on himself as a bisexual man.

As such any story involving these three characters often involves a slow build up of the relationship. It has to overcome a lot of negative baggage for all characters involved, including Kyle.

Alex would be the key person in any triad involving himself, Michael and Kyle. He is the one with the strong one-on-one relationship with the other two men - his one of long time friendship with Kyle and his one of love and physical intimacy with Michael. He is the person to whom both Michael and Kyle will defer when it comes to how the relationship will develop. Not to say the Alex is controlling, but for me, I see Alex as needing to have a certain level of control within the relationship to feel safe. Also he’s been the one taking orders for most of his life, initially from his father, and later from the military (including it dictating who he can and can’t love). And the other two men are willing to cede that control (within agreed upon boundaries).

In Kyle’s case, this ceding of control is actually a positive element of the relationship. In his day to day life, Kyle has to be the decision maker, the responsible one - to be able to give up that need to make decisions to someone he trusts is very freeing for him. It also allows him to demonstrate his trust in others in a very concrete way, allowing him to fulfill his natural caregiver tendencies without the decision making responsibility that usually accompanies it.

This demonstration of trust is particularly important when it comes to his interactions and relationship with Michael - who has trust issues in general (as a result of his abusive childhood), and towards Kyle specifically as a result of his teenage treatment of Alex. In Michael and Alex, Kyle is dealing with two people who have been abused throughout their lives, who have been betrayed by people who were supposed to love and care for them, and because of who they loved. As such, Kyle’s caring nature kicks in and is expressed by letting the other two men take the lead.

Max, Liz and Kyle

The grouping of Liz, Max and Kyle is perhaps the more obvious when looking at possible polyamorous relationships within Roswell New Mexico. Liz is the focus for this relationship - having been high school sweethearts with Kyle, and in a newly rekindled relationship with Max.

This relationship provides Kyle with the opportunity to let his inner alpha male out (he’s a surgeon, he’s going to have certain alpha tendencies). While Liz and Max have both had traumatic events happen in their lives, they have otherwise been brought up in loving and supportive home environments. This has given both of them a confidence and resilience that could express itself in more robust relationship dynamics. Liz feels safe with Kyle. He has demonstrated his willingness to follow Liz’s lead when it comes to their relationship and in return, this gives Liz the confidence to hand over control to Kyle, confident that that trust won’t be abused.

With Max, I can see Kyle perhaps taking the lead in their relationship because he has more confidence in what they are doing, possibly based on having previous experience with men, possibly just because he is more confident in general.

For Kyle, this means being able to be more demanding of his lovers, more forthright in asking for what he wants. He doesn’t need to play such a caregiver role that requires him to put the needs of other first, he is able to be more bossy, to what he wants first.

Overall, I think Kyle is a very under-rated character and one who has become one of my favourites on the show. That he has been depicted with such depth of character that he can believably be seen as a member of two very different triads is a testament to both the writers and the actors on the show. I hope this great characterisation continues in Season 2 and I hope that Kyle finally gets to be with someone with whom he develop a strong relationship with. Because lets face it, we are never going to see either of these triads happen on the show. But that’s why we have and love fan fiction!!
